‘Concussion’, released on Christmas day, 25 december 2015, which stars Will Smith, is based on a true life story written by Nigerian born Dr. Bennet Omalu.
Dr. Omalu is a forensic pathologist who, after conducting an autopsy on
famous American
footballer, Mike Webster, discovered a new disease,
chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE. CTE is a neuro-degenerative
disease that occurs as a result of repeated brain trauma. Over time, it
causes depression, dementia, and other behavioral changes. Omalu linked
the disease with American football players, who over the course of their
career receive repeated blows to their heads due to the nature of the
sport. Omalu’s discovery caused a lot of controversy in the American
National Football League, NFL, with many questioning the safety of the
sport.
He wrote a book on his discovery, ‘Play Hard, Die Young’ on which the
movie is based. He is currently the chief medical examiner of San
Joaquin County, Calif. and a professor in the ‘UC’ Davis Department of
Medical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Will Smith plays Omalu in
‘Concussion’ which WAS released on Christmas day, December 25 2015.
